The Cost of Social Technology – Part 1 of 2

The Cost of Social Technology – Part 1 of 2

Today, even during a recession we’re pampered with amenities enabling us to keep up to date with each others goings on. Mobile phones adorn almost everyone’s pocket and high speed broadband is the norm in most households. Social networking sites such as Facebook and MySpace as well as other file sharing websites such as YouTube and Flickr are some of the most visited sites on the net. Now, mobile computing and mobile broadband are becoming a more and more common trend as people want to stay connected whilst they move around. But what’s the real cost of the all?

Did you know: YouTube is the world’s 2nd largest search engine after Google?

Surprisingly, companies such as Facebook and YouTube are set to lose big money this year, the latter an estimated $ 470 million. Companies benefiting from user-created content or Content 2.0 generally look to monetize via advertising, but at the end of the day if you’re on YouTube looking at your Uncle Joe dancing at a wedding party, your not going to be that receptive to ads – and nor are the advertisers, who need their ads targeted to make it worthwhile for them. At the end of the day, that is their true customer and clientele not the visitors. Unhappy advertisers, unhappy balance sheet and unhappy shareholders.

Think of it as a newspaper again. Readers are allowed to comment, post their view, videos and have it distributed to every other reader in the world. The difference is it’s online which although you don’t have to cut down (sorry, recycle) trees, print and distribute the content you do need to be able to stream videos fast to the users which requires a massive bandwidth. This is what costs YouTube the bulk of it’s $ 700 million expenses per annum.

Google, the search engine giant purchase YouTube a few years back, but the investment has yet to do much except give it a half billion dollar whole in the bank every year. So what can they do about it? Well, there are several options:

1) Cut out user generated content, leaving the monetizeable professional content

2) Move to a subscription based service

3) Selling YouTube

The former may well destroy the whole point of YouTube and would create uproar amongst many online communities. Indeed it could simply turn YouTube into one big advertising channel which will probably kill it’s traffic.

The second option does seem to make sense, especially for the members who upload videos. A small membership fee per annum, say $ 2-5 would put YouTube in the black whilst keeping disruption to the minimum. Incidentally, it could also help improve the quality of content since people would think twice before uploading if it cost $ X amount to distribute the content.

The latter doesn’t solve the problem; it merely offloads it to someone else. It is also unlikely to help boost Google’s balance sheet. The value of YouTube has certainly diminished since Google bought it, but depends on what a buyer reckons they can do with it.

The Digital Boom 2011

The Digital Boom 2011

Twenty-ten was huge for Social. We saw baby companies grow to giants, old giants fall and innovation beyond our wildest dreams, but what does that mean for 2011? We as consumers are definitely going to enjoy the entry and growth of new players in the segment in 2011. One has to keep reinventing to keep pace with the highly competitive digital world else getting obsolete will not take much time.

Facebook and Twitter and YouTube are all dominant, but that doesn’t mean permanently dominant. Many largely popular media were replaced by their lesser known cousins in 2010. 2011 will bring more innovation from them and others to further strike footholds into the digital market. The innovations thus introduced will be worth watching and experiencing.

We should see some incredibly huge buy-outs, and some extraordinarily large sums of money changing hands. The usual Google/Yahoo/Microsoft/AOL suspects will be spending large of course. New entrants will of course fight with these larger players for their share which will be a big show to watch in 2011.  There is already news doing the rounds that facebook and Microsoft have joined hands to enter the market that is largely dominated by Google.

We will see a larger commercial explosion utilizing much of the geolocation/crowdsourcing technologies we have so far only used for fun, and ‘Social’ experiences becoming more serious, more integrated with everyday life. Larger stakes will be involved and of course the lifestyle that is already going so many changes and has undergone a large number of changes will surely change in this year. There is all possibility that separate classes will be created according to your involvement with the digital media.

On the handheld device front, expect more power at your fingertips, a larger competition-level on the mobile and tablet market, and further, deeper integration into our home life. The consumer will be the most sought after being in this market with penetration deep into your living room via the social and digital media. You can avoid it but you can’t ignore it.

Franchisees Must Employ Social Media To Satisfy Consumers

Franchisees Must Employ Social Media To Satisfy Consumers
Businesses of all sizes are using social media to advance their marketing campaigns and appeal to new audiences, young and old. Franchises are no different – social networks such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, Flickr and WordPress can help take a franchise opportunity from just getting by to enjoying soaring profits.

According to AllBusiness.com, there are several advantages to using social media: It attracts like-minded consumers, speaks to audiences thousands of miles away, helps tame rumors and start fires, establishes a company as an industry leader, enhances partnerships, collects feedback and exposes owners to new and different ideas.

Additionally, consumers want to be able to connect with companies and their products through social media channels. According to the Cone Business in Social Media Study, 93 percent of social media users think a company should have a presence on such Web sites, with an additional 85 percent believing that a company should not only be present but also interact with its consumers via these channels.

‘The news here is that Americans are eager to deepen their brand relationships through social media,’ explained Mike Hollywood, director of new media for Cone. ‘It isn’t an intrusion into their lives, but rather a welcome channel for discussion.’

It is clear that taking advantage of this channel offers the potential for a massive expansion of clientele for franchisees. However, All Business explained that the secret to mastering communication is not talking, but listening.

‘Great communicators ask a lot of questions. They really listen to what you have to say. They inquire deeply into the answers you provide,’ said the Web site.

Luckily, there are a few tools that will help franchisees get started. Twitter accountholders (which all franchisees should be) can go to Twitter Search and enter their name, their franchise name, any brand names and even competitor’s names. This will build an RSS feed that means owners don’t have to do a search every day. TweetBeep will do the same thing, but send the alerts to a franchisee’s inbox instead.

Another tool, BackType, allows franchisees to monitor blog posts for both positive and negative mentions. Also, if certain users are consistently posting reviews about a particular franchise, the tool will allow the unit owner to set up BackType to track them and their comments.

There is no one way for franchisees to begin using social media. However, before opening an account on any social networking Web site, unit owners should check the company’s policies and whether they already have a social identity in place.

The Liberty Tax Service franchise opportunity is on the “Fastest-Growing Franchise” list of Entrepreneur magazine’s 2010 “Franchise 500.” Our tax franchise is an affordable and viable business choice. Each office provides thorough, computerized tax preparation coupled with superior customer service.

Repairing MySQL database when Error 1146 indicates table corruption

Repairing MySQL database when Error 1146 indicates table corruption

MySQL database is one of most used open-sourced database, which is used by numerous users over the world. Being a free, reliable, secure, and fast-paced database system, it is highly preferred as the backend support for numerous high-traffic and popular web-based applications such as Flickr, Google, You Tube, Yahoo!, etc. For different types of storage needs, it offers different kinds of database engines such as InnoDB, MyISAM, etc. However, at times these tables do get corrupt due to various reasons including virus infections, abrupt system shutdown, bugs in the current MySQL version, etc. In such cases, there can be different methods to provide the workaround. If these methods do not work, then you should use a third-party MySQL repair software to repair MySQL database.

Consider a situation in which you start the MySQL 5.1 server by starting the ‘mysqld’ process. However, the following error message is displayed and the server does not start:

“Default storage engine is not available.”

You reinstall the MySQL server without removing the data directory. Next time, when you try to access any MySQL database table, you are unable to do so. The following error message is displayed this time around:

“ERROR 1146 (42S02): Table ‘test.no_such_table’ doesn’t exist”

Here, 1146 refers to the error code.

42SO2 refers to the five-character SQL state.

Cause:

Such erroneous situation occurs when the MySQL table that you are using is corrupt.

Resolution:

To repair MySQL database in such case, you should perform either of the following methods:

Use updated backup: First of all, you should check if there is any clean and updated backup of the MySQL table. If yes, then restore the table with the backup.
Use Repair Table tool: If the backup is not up-to-date, then you should try to repair MySQL table using the Repair Table tool with either ‘QUICK’ or ‘EXTENDED’ repair clause. This tool can be used in the following syntax:

REPAIR [NO_WRITE_TO_BINLOG | LOCAL] TABLE

tbl_name [, tbl_name] …

[QUICK] [EXTENDED] [USE_FRM]

The situation will be resolved using the aforementioned solution, however if the problem persists then this situation calls for the use of a third-party MySQL recovery software. These MySQL repair tools are highly interactive and the use of non-destructive repairing mechanisms enable easy and safe recovery of MySQL tables.

In such situations, I would suggest you to use Stellar Phoenix Database Recovery for MySQL, which works for MySQL 3.x, 4.x, 5.x, and 6.x versions. With the ability to repair MySQL database created for various database engines including MyISAM and InnoDB, this MySQL repair utility recovers several objects like tables, views, primary keys, etc. Compatible with Windows 7, Vista, Server 2003, XP, and 2000, this MySQL recovery software recovers MySQL files including .ibdata, .ibd, .myd, .myi, and .frm.

My name is Mark Willium, I have done Ph.D in computer science and currently doing research on how to recover and repair corrupted mysql database. During research i found a third party repair mysql database softwqare to repair corrupted mysql database.

The Explanation for Creative Commons

The Explanation for Creative Commons

The issue of copyright has been brought front and center for a number of people by the popularity of the Internet – particularly websites such as YouTube, Flickr, and other sharing websites. Several people have the feeling that conventional copyright laws don’t get on well with the present media channels, or should at least be adapted accordingly.

Creative Commons, founded in 2001, is a non-profit organization located in San Francisco striving to make it easier for people to share and promote their own work and the work of others. They have developed a set of free copyright licenses to show how a work can be altered or distributed, if at all.

There are four licenses offered by Creative Commons –

Attribution: which allows others to copy, distribute, display, and perform the work and any derivative works, but only if properly attributed,

Non-Commercial: which allows others to copy, distribute, display, and perform the work and any derivative works, but only for non-commercial purposes,

No Derivative Works: which allows others to copy, distribute, display, and perform the original work, but not any works derived from it,

and Share Alike: which allows others distribute derivative works as long as the licenses associated with the original work stay intact.

While these four licenses technically provide 16 different potential combinations, only six combinations are used with any regularity –

Attribution: which allows people to share and make money off your work as long as you are properly attributed,

Attribution Share Alike: which adds to Attribution that all new works must keep the original licenses,

Attribution No Derivates: which adds to Attribution that the work must remain unchanged,

Attribution Non-Commercial: which allows people to share – but not make money off of – your work as long as you are properly attributed,

Attribution Non-Commercial Share Alike: which adds to Attribution Non-Commercial that all new works will keep the original licenses,

and Attribution Non-Commercial No Derivatives: which adds to Attribution Non-Commercial that the work must remain unchanged.

There are various applications for this in music, software, art, and more. A creator just needs to decide if they want credit, if they want people to be able to make money off their original work, if they want people to be able to change the work, and if someone does change it, whether or not that person can change the licensing.

Anyone interested in apply for a free license can search online to apply and find out more about the organization.
